we were discussing the Chinese radio products from various vendors flooding the market.
One of the first to launch in the US was HYT (now Hytera). Said he was given a HYT radio, opened it up, and it was an exact clone of a Kenwood model. The Chinks new this radio model was successful and duplicated it at every step. The software wasn't reverse engineered. No, it was copied right from the Kenwood model.
Fast forward a few years and the same Chinese company had hired engineers from Motorola. They managed to bring with them proprietary Motorola software to incorporate into their "similar" products. It was so close they got sued by Motorola. A court decision required them to remove the copyrighted software from every sold radio and US dealers had to do so. Don't know if they got reimbursed for doing it, but I know it was a pain in the ass for dealers.
Basically Hytera is still paying Motorola royalties for the technology and intellectual property they stole. It wouldn't upset me to see China brought to its knees with tariffs to level the playing field with all the stuff they've stolen. Fvck them.
