be slower to respond &/or less aggressive in counterattacking those who are criticizing his players.

He could also, in some instances, have defended himself or done so more aggressively, but seems to let some of that slide, especially when it leaves some room for criticisms to fall on his shoulders rather than on the player(s).

Or so it seems to me.
