I hate to be the one to break it to you, but the Russians already have large chunks of Ukrainian land. The question for Z is does he wish to stop the war and ceed some land to the Russians or does he wish to keep fighting and lose it all along with thousands more Ukrainian deaths.

Z is not in a position to dictate terms here.
