in FB, they typically cost less, and they can have a greater impact due to the significantly smaller team/roster size of BB.
With that said, I probably wouldn't fault Gates for missing on an elite in-state player either. For example, if Cooper Flagg was a Missourian and committed to Duke instead of Mizzou.
Unlike you, I'm objective towards the two coaches, but I also recognize the major differences in the sports they compete in. FB is more expensive and more competitive, which is why it's been more difficult for Mizzou to compete in. Drink has significantly outperformed in the past 2 seasons.
"Gates has at least made the NCAA tournament 2 out of his first 3 years."
Making the NCAA Tournament is equivalent to making a bowl game in football. In fact, more SEC teams reached the NCAAT this year (14/16) than reached a bowl game (13/16).
The difficulty of reaching the 12-team playoff (more like an 8-team playoff due to the AQ bids) is extraordinary for a school like Mizzou. That you would compare it to reaching a 68-team tournament in basketball reveals your subjective bias.
