Football and volleyball in the fall
MBB and WBB, Gymnastics in the winter
Softball in the spring
These are the most valuable college TV sports per ratings as I understand it. They also work well for a Midwestern state’s sports culture. Baseball has some value too but the investment is just too damn great for Mizzou apparently. Wrestling gets pretty good ratings for the championships and isn’t costing Mizzou that much but if you have to choose between the aforementioned women’s sports and wrestling, it’s a no brainer. Note: I don’t want wrestling to go. Another great fit for a Midwestern state.
Golf, tennis, track teams don’t really hurt financially that much to have but not great sports to have in the Midwest as the talent pool is thin. Probably the same with S/D. If they do poorly, hardly anyone will notice, so they have that going for them. Baseball stands out like a sore thumb because they are seen on TV a lot and the SEC culture values baseball more than any other conference. Therefore, it is just a big embarrassment to Mizzou but does Mizzou Nation collectively care that the SEC looks at Mizzou baseball as an utter joke? Evidence is not great that they do.
The answer is football of course but Mizzou is obligated to fund women’s sports and provide compelling content that helps Sankey sell TV rights. I assume the SEC would not look favorably on dropping baseball but where in the hell is the investment going to come from when Mizzou doesn’t sit in a great college baseball area?
