also a lot o folks who can't appreciate that the "truth" of some theories and norms is limited to particular paradigms. When paradigms change, or are revealed, they have trouble resetting their prior observations within the revelation and get angry.

Most economic theories about tariffs assume those imposed are small enough to not affect the balance of trade and therefore should be ignored as a pin ***** in the overall picture. However, the punitive tariffs employed against the United States (while we have paid to secure the seas for free and fair trade for generations) are outside this paradigm and caused some (certainly not all) of the overleverage in the last 20 years while SE Asia ramped up to take our lunch. This is not the Walter Johnson discussion.
