There was a time when large swaths of America were information deserts. They did not have the population density or wealth to make radio and TV stations viable. PBS and NPR gave very low-cost options for many areas to have at least minimal access to news and entertainment.
Since their original purpose no longer exists, they should be gracefully retired. Don't just cut funding and cut the power tomorrow, give them a six month window so they can wrap up operations and celebrate their history before signing off the air once and for all.
For those who have issues with their current status, I'm one, remember that they have a past that was much different than what we currently see.
