are those claiming that the government should not be "prohibiting" people from consuming what they want.
That argument is absurd. They aren't proposing that at all. They are just saying that they don't think the government should be taking money from other people, such as taxpayers and consumers dealing with the inflation that results from government deficits & "printing money" to pay for it, in order to buy unhealthy food for people who presumably need financial help to feed themselves or their families.
Sugary foods are implicated in most preventable diseases that are plaguing modern societies... heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, and it feeds cancers as well.
Then the taxpayers are also expected to fund the health care costs for those needy people, which is caused &/or exacerbated by those unhealthy foods.
Buying them those items really makes no more sense than buying them harmful drugs.
