steel was still coming along - the fasteners, too

French steel actually used to be good. The Theory of Plasticity (I had a class on it in grad school) was first developed from Napoleon's generals noticing the change in shape of their cannon over time with use.

I think they spent too much effort trying to have other folks do the messy stuff for them, though, and look where they are...
