the message was that Trump's bargaining position is that both Ukraine and Russia would like the war to end quickly and that he would offer a carrot and a stick to both parties to make them more willing to come to an agreement that presumably made Trump look good to the American people.

The "implied threat", if you will, to Putin, would the that the US would continue aiding Ukraine in a big way if he didn't immediately take the cease fire deal he had negotiated with Ukraine and negotiate in good faith to put a quick end to the war.

Putin is letting everyone know that until he agrees to anything that he's going to continue the war in full force with no letup if he is currently at an advantage on the battlefield.
