Almost everything after that was about power, not public safety. In some circles it is still going on.
The proper response would have been to listen to the health experts and then weigh their recommendations against the impact of those responses. Instead, we rubber stamped anything coming out of the CDC or local public health offices.
Every day when I leave my house to go to work, I am taking a risk. But I weigh that risk versus the rewards of leaving and get in my car and go about my day. During COVID we ignored that calculation and let the 'professionals' tell us what was an acceptable risk for us.
