KC and STL are as blue as Chicago or San Francisco, with suburbs that range from red (mostly the exurbs-think white flight), to purple, to blue, and a college town with 100k, Columbia, is blue. I understand Springfield, the city, is or has turned blue, but not the surrounding area, which is pretty much the Bible Belt.
You also have a problem with "moderate" republicans in the state legislature who prevent certain bold conservative measures.
