Since one idiot after another keeps criticizing Zelensky for not holding elections.
1. The Ukrainian Constitution clearly forbids elections of Parliament or President during periods of martial law.
2. After Russia invaded, the Ukrainian Parliament declared martial law. It is still in effect.
3. Therefore, under the Ukrainian Constitution, elections are forbidden.
4. Yes, America held elections during martial law during the Civil War. The American Constitution, however, does NOT prohibit elections during martial law.
5. Additionally, during our Civil War, very little Union territory, and no major population centers except for Washington D.C., were in war zones. Conversely, every square foot of Ukraine is a war zone and under constant threat of attack by high explosive Russian missiles. Furthermore, approximately 20% of the country is physically occupied by the Russians.
6. Therefore, even if it didn’t violate the Ukrainian Constitution, it would be essentially impossible to hold a free election in Ukraine.
Now that all this has been made clear, anyone who subsequently posts that Ukraine should have elections, or criticizes Ukraine for not doing so, is presumptively an idiot and acting in bad faith.
