members' I have known could be counted on two hands with fingers left over. Most of those were exactly what you picture when you think of union teachers.
You need to turn off the national media when it comes to teachers' unions. Outside of negotiating our contracts teachers' unions have no power in this part of the country.
In DC, Chicago, LA and other big cities they are a real problem. Not locally. I cannot even tell you who the union rep is in my building.
Also I will put my 'slacker' degree up against whatever yours may be. At the high school level, you must have a degree in a curriculum area. I took two fewer physics classes than the rest of the people in my department the same was true of my math minor. Those were replaced with classes on teaching the subject matter.
Elementary teachers focus less on subject matter but it would be pretty dumb to have them studying advanced subjects just to teach small children. I would rather my child's teacher understand childhood development and learning progressions over being able to solve calculus equations.
