and bureaucrats, who have the "common good" as their only, holy guiding light, know better what to do with that money than the citizen. That is the driving force of all those afraid of, or find contempt in, individualism. The awesome force of government is what impresses them.
It is a worship of power and the inflicting of punishment on those who are politically disagreeable. A story as old as government itself.
I just re-read the Civil War Diary of Gideon Welles. He was Secretary of the Navy under Lincoln. Long, detailed passages of his personal observations show how much graft and plunder of the treasury went on during that time.
Nothing changes, just the loyal foot soldiers cheering on their benevolent leaders and sneering at those on the other team.
