1. Great effort against a far better Tennessee team. I thought we would lose by 15-20 and we had the ball with 30 seconds to go and a chance to tie. It’s just nice to see us in competitive games in the last 3 games, makes the games fun to watch again, ever though we are tied for last place in the SEC and have no realistic chance of making the NCAA tourney.
2. Why have we played 3 close, competitive games in a row against tourney teams? I have no idea, other than to say I doubt it has anything to do with some brilliant change in strategy or coaching from Pingeton. She is what she is. Various girls are stepping up and playing a bit better, and the effort is excellent. And yes I do think Texas took us for granted, and gave us their C+ game, but I agree it’s not logical to use that as an excuse for every better team we play well against. Plus, Miss St is not at all like Texas/Tennessee. Yes all 3 will make the tourney, but Miss St will do so as a very low seed.
3. As great as it was to play Tennessee as close as we did, you can see the flaws in the team, flaws that prevented us from pulling off the upset. Even though we held our own on the boards, an absolute shocker, and got a completely unexpected 18 points off the bench from Brown, we had 24 turnovers. Just awful. Struggling to bring the ball up the court, and turning nearly every in bounds pass into an adventure, is both a personnel and coaching issue, and both are Pingetons fault 100%.
4. Poor FT shooting just killed us in the 4th quarter with the game on the line. 15-23 for the game; Brown went 8-9 and the rest of the team went 7-14. The sequence with about a minute to go just killed us. After a UT foul and a stupid technical, we were gifted with 4 straight free throws plus the ball out of bounds. An opportunity for 6-7 points, yet we got only 3 points out of it when we bricked the first 3 FTs before Slaughter hit her last one and got a layup off the in bounds play. So instead of a tie game we were still down 3. Huge missed opportunity.
5. Then even after blowing that great chance to tie the game, we hold Tennessee, turn the ball over with about 30 seconds to go, and have a chance to tie and send the game to OT. So, of course, in a very Mizzou way, we don’t even attempt a 3 point shot, but throw the ball inside and miss a layup. We had Slaughter and Judd on the court, but didn’t give either a chance to tie the game. And of course had a great 3 point shooter, Schreacke, on the bench, because why on earth would Pingeton want a really good 3 point shooter in the game when we need a 3 point basket. That's not the way she rolls.
