If a QB is under pressure and has to get rid of the ball, throwing outside the hashmarks gives receivers a much better way to get to the sideline so the QB doesn't have to throw the ball and possibly get it tipped for a potential interception. He can throw the ball out of bounds if needed.
GAT taught me this. He was around way before they had face masks, and understands the nuances of offensive football.
