Mizzou Athletics Fund Members,

What a start to 2025! After an excellent finish to 2024, including football picking up its 10th win for a second-straight season with a Music City Bowl championship, a men’s basketball win over No. 1 Kansas and volleyball reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, we already have a men’s basketball win at top-5 Florida to our credit in 2025! We are also extremely proud of our student-athletes for earning a 3.44 grade point average for the fall semester, which is an all-time record high. Our programs and student-athletes are truly displaying a “Will to Win” in everything they do. We are also already seeing incredible excitement for the 2025 football season, with over 1,100 people joining our season ticket wait list and renewals going very well.

I am writing to touch base on a report you may have seen earlier this week, where the University provided details about its level of institutional support to the athletics department for this past fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2024. To summarize, while athletics’ self-generated revenues increased nearly 15 percent from 2023 to 2024, expenses increased over 26 percent, with our University continuing to invest strategically in athletics as a core piece of its mission. This investment has allowed us to take strides competitively and invest in our programs and personnel, which we will continue to do with a renewed focus on winning. Expense increases have also been driven in part by inflationary impacts on core operating costs such as flights, hotels and food.

While the past fiscal year ended shortly after I arrived at Mizzou as Director of Athletics, I share immense gratitude for the commitment of our Board of Curators, University President Mun Choi and his entire leadership team. We do not take for granted how engaged and invested our leadership is in how intercollegiate athletics can elevate the brand profile and enrollment of our University, as well as the economy of our community and State. Their commitment to excelling at the highest levels in the SEC and nationally is visionary, especially at this time of change in intercollegiate athletics.

I truly enjoy and appreciate experiencing the collective Will to Win of all of you and our entire fanbase, alongside that of our student-athletes, programs and leadership. As we continue to do our part to help close the resource gap in our conference and focus our resources on winning and creating lifelong memories and experiences, we really do have an incredible opportunity in front of us. We look forward to continuing to communicate with transparency and have plans to provide more perspective in the near future. We cannot thank you enough for locking arms with us and shooting the gap, together!

M-I-Z!

Laird Veatch
