It started in the 19th century with the rise of daily newspapers in large cities, but in the 20th and more so in the 21st century, media has become consolidated into large organizations.

These large media organizations are likewise publicly traded entities with shareholders being finance & banking institutions, insurance conglomerates and other large investors.

The nature of these large media corporations is an interest in profit, which also is a commonality with the shareholders. Shareholders vote for the board of directors. The board of directors steers the executives. This creates a massive conflict of interest where the shareholders have power over what gets reported.

This is amplified because these large media organizations are also buying up local newspapers and local television stations. The news coverage has shifted to focus more on national news than local news.

As a result of this massive consolidation within the news media, it is a tool for gate keeping what is reported, focused on the interests of the elite, particularly factions of the elite. Coverage of political candidates is focused on Republican vs Democrat and alternative view points are rarely brought up.

This play a role in the elite shaping US elections. The public is informed on what the elite want them to hear and the candidates of the factions they want in office. The intended results are a populace who only knows two options (Republican or Democrat), the ones the elite want them to know.

Media corporations are also highly dependent upon advertising revenue. There is a financial interest in not having advertisements withdrawn by reporting on scandals involving those corporations and their executives.

When you watch the news, the content is limited to what others want you to know and shaped for what others want you to think. And this controlled messaging affects how you see your choices in voting.

The argument comes up that the internet is a great source for alternative media to escape the messaging of corporate media controlled interests.

That sounds great on the surface. The reality is people gravitate towards alternative media sources that confirm existing biases that have already been shaped by years or decades of propaganda. Rarely do people venture outside the alternative media sources they latch on to in order to listen and understand the voices in alternative media who have differing perspectives on issues.

Finally, most people do not have the time, interest or intellect to evaluate the truthfulness of alternative media sources. They find comfort in hearing what they want to hear and do not recognize the obvious signposts of ideologues in the reporting by alternative media.
