Climatologists generally agree the earth is experiencing one of its periodic warming periods following the last ice age. The steady, but minute increases in temperature have occurred more or less uninterrupted for roughly 14,000 years. In Missouri the Missouri River marks the southern edge of the Laurentide glacier. At some locations the ice sheet was two miles high. As the ice sheet melted rocks, gravels, soil, clay and organic materials that had been carried southward within the ice collapsed in heaps and covered the surface. Often upwards of 200 feet deep deposits of glacial till were left.
