Academic success (#17 in the nation among national universities in current U.S. News & World Report rankings, fyi Mizzou ix ranked
#109) is more important to Cal than their athletic conference. In other words if the choice is between being regarded as one of the nation's very best Universities academically or in a top athletic conference, Cal Berkley will more likely than not opt for the former every time.

Bluntly, academics are more important than athletics to some folks.
