play for it to ever work
1. 90 plus teams will only have a 10 game season. That would be too much money lost from butts in seats and tv rights. Plus it would really suck to be that 37th ranked team
2. American football will never copy anything from soccer even if it is a good idea
3. Army/Navy game and conference championships are held sacred by the powers that be and they will not interfere with them
4. There will always be *****ing about the playoff, whether its 4, 12 or 36 teams. If we get many more teams in the playoffs than what we have now, it seems almost as a participation award
5. This would still be based on a panel of voters, who try, but never will please everyone. In my mind it is much easier to define the top 4 or even top 10 teams in the country. Beyond that it gets very murky and would be difficult to rank them objectively. The case could be made that a 4-6 team or should be in the top 36
