If you removed the top 4 conference champion byes

and just ranked the teams, you'd have:

1 Oregon
2 UGA
3 Tex
4 Penn St
5 ND
6 OSU
7 Tenn
8 Indiana
9 Boise
10 SMU
11 ASU
12 Clemson

This would make exponentially more sense IMO.

The 1 seed Oregon wouldn't have as much of a gauntlet in their quarter game. Teams not even in the top 10 wouldn't have a bye and would have to instead play a tough road game.

Go ahead and still let the top 5 conference champs in, pick your 7 at large, and just rank the field from there.
