Imagine if there were a conference with the 8 best teams in the country:

• Ohio State
• Penn State
• Oregon
• Texas
• Alabama
• Georgia
• Tennessee
• Ole Miss

Those teams would cannibalize themselves in conference play, e.g., with each sustaining 4 losses.

By your logic, none of those teams should get in the playoff because they "didn't win more games" without factoring in how difficult their schedule was compared to the rest of college football.

In other words, you'd have a playoff with zero (0) of the 8 best teams.
