Before him deficit spending was for war time (as it has been throughout history) and for infrastructure, as we saw under Eisenhower.

Reagan spent like a fish. Bush I tried to reign it in by increasing taxes, which was his end. Clinton balanced the budget and actually had a surplus on an annual basis. Bush II spent like a fish just like Reagan thanks primarily to two unpopular wars.

Obama increased the deficit bigly, so did Trump. Biden has as well.

We're now spending $600+ billion on interest on that debt and for comparison that's about 75% of total defense spending. Something has to give.
