They don’t mean he is a purposeful threat to democracy. They mean because he is so stupid and incompetent, so easily manipulated, and surrounds himself with such terrible people him being President is a threat to our country and therefore democracy. Not because of something he would tactically do or purposefully execute. But in a clumsy and difficult to predict because of how dumb it would be manner.

They have just been unable to say “this guy is absurdly dumb and a total joke, nobody takes him seriously and neither should you. Just look at him and take him at face value”. Instead they keep trying to be adult and tactful and it is missing the point. It’s ok to acknowledge a total imbecile is a total imbecile. The nuance is not being digested.
