It’s like he can’t even hear them and is just waiting for a break in the conversation to begin rambling about whatever independent thought starts streaming through his head.

I’m not even sure if it would be possible to have an actual conversation with him at this point. He is like a clueless grandpa in a nursing home where everything confuses or scares him and he just rambles about nonsense.
