Educational institutions are “tax free” under Internal Revenue Code Section 501c(3) (if memory serves). At what point does college football cross its boundaries and become a taxable enterprise, at least for the schools and players?
Income generated by Universities may or may not be taxable (unrelated business income). An argument can be made that producing football games is “unrelated” to a school’s education and research functions.
