but simply more effective for the longer range and higher torque things Americans actually do

like:

use the air conditioner for hours
pull a boat or small trailer
drive longer distances with some small hills and headwinds (even some commutes have this, many)

Each of these (and many more typical service conditions) dramatically reduce the effective range of the electric car/truck. It's so bad that you need two vehicles - an electric one for a short trip to town or if you have a short commute, and then a conventional one for everything else.
