and poultry industries are vertically integrated. However, the beef industry is not. Generally, the major players of these meat processing business do not own the means to supply their feed requirements. Many of these processing firms contract production out to local farmers, who own their own facilities and may grow much of their feed supplies. In the case of Smithfield, the large acreages of land they own are rented/leased out to local farmers. Smithfield and other pork producers require land to handle applications of manure collected from their farrow and finishing operations. It is a part of their waste management program.
