Secondly, the issue is lying about his rank, his appearing in combat, and the nature/timing of his "retirement" from the guard which people take issue with.

he's a candidate for VP of the United States. The bar is higher than for your buddy, who, I'm assuming, hasn't lied about his service to gain political favor.
