getting your head blown off can affect someone emotionally, psychologically.
He did seem more somber, less flamboyant, less vitriolic. Don't know if that was intentional or not. He seemed emotional at the response of the crowd.
Anyway, I'm not sure what the proper reaction to a near death experience should be.
