Sure, the president's job, isn't to debate. But, two large parts of the job are:

(1) integrate varying information from various sources about complex situations and make well thought out decisions, and

(2) be prepared for and have difficult discussions, both with those inside the US and other world leaders.

Given a week to prepare, he wasn't able to effectively showcase his ability to do either.
