visited an old friend's family the week before Christmas in Diamond Head, MS.
Of course, we got into New Orleans every day and had the usual great time there. We had lunch one afternoon at Stein's Deli on Magazine and I was able to satiate my taste for great pastrami that I am unable to do in STL. Stein's has a great beer store in the back where I found a magnum of Chimay Bleu in a retro bottle. We also thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon session at The Avenue on St. Charles in the Lower Garden District. This place is highly, highly recommended for any beer lovers.
We had dinner at Gallatoire's the evening of another day. While we waited for all of our
other guests to arrive, we cooled our heels at their 1st floor bar addition called 33. I ordered a Laphroaig 10 yo instead of any aperitif, but after being served, I noticed a bottle of Port Charlotte Scottish Barley on the back bar, and remarked that I don't see it that often in restaurant bars. One of the bartenders confided that it was a promotional bottle, and that they would welcome any assistance that I could lend to disposing of it. When we were seated in the second floor dining room, I obliged the bartender and ordered a Port Charlotte neat, and my old friend followed my lead. We were rewarded with triple shots of the whisky, and charged only $9.00 apiece. I was pleased to learn that peated whisky goes quite well with bouillabaisse. That really set the tone for an after dinner session at the Napolean House.
When we returned to STL, we maintained that tone throughout the holiday weekend....Peche Mortel Stout, Isseki Nicho imperial dark saison, followed by Irish coffee with Powers on Christmas Eve, bottles of various Hefeweizen during Christmas Day, an assortment of stouts (some fortified with port), barleywines, and spiced ales (including a keg of Bell's Christmas Ale) at a friend's house that evening, but the best was saved for last.
One of the neighboring couples are expat Irish, and they invite the neighborhood over for Boxing Day. I brought some aged Founders Breakfast Stout for brunch, but that just set the stage. Included in the assorted beverages on a credenza was a bottle of Balvenie 15 yo Single Barrel that was incredibly delicious....very highly recommended.
I hope everybody enjoyed the holidays as much as we did. I'd enjoy hearing what everybody else was imbibing.
