First of all, a worthwhile read. Couldn’t put it down - read it in 2 days.

I never realized Bud Adams, the former owner of the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans, was a Kansas alum and the snake who provided the illegal contact, plane rides, and goodies to Bert Coan, the ku player who never should have been eligible for the Mizzou game (glad the Rams took care of his Titans in the Super Bowl)

I previously thought Bert Coan was just “some player”. That player was the state of Texas 100 yard dash champion and long jump champion. And scored 2 touchdowns in the Mizzou season ending game.

I knew that the AP and UPI used to do their rankings before the bowl games - and finally changed the practice after Bama was named national champ in 64 and then lost their bowl game. Not a doubt in my mind that if they did it that way after the 1960 season, Mizzou would have been crowned national champ. 2 loss Minnesota has the “official” title of 1960 champ - after losing to 4-4-1 Purdue in the regular season - and in their bowl game to Washington after the season.

It’s tough for college kids to come off a meat grinder of a game (Mizzou won at Oklahoma in Norman) and then have their A game the following week (against ku)

What a decade of the 60’s was for Mizzou. Only Division 1 team to go through the entire decade with no single season with more than 3 losses. Impressive.

Here’s a take that won’t be popular. When I read how Mizzou handled preparations prior to the Kansas game - and then thinking how Mizzou didn’t play their best game at all 9 years later against Penn State in the Orange Bowl - thought maybe Devine had a bit of “Norm Stewart’s disease” Iin getting his very good teams up for the biggest games. Probably not a totally fair assessment, but when I read how they prepared for the ku game that, if they won, would have removed all doubt about Mizzou being the national champs (with the AP and UPI voting before the bowl games), it was disappointing to read how they weren’t prepared for the season finale as they should have been.

Ironically, Devine’s assistant Al Onofrio would have the opposite experience as a head coach 16 years later - winning the big games and losing to inferior teams he should have beaten.

I always knew Bob Broeg of the Post Dispatch and Devine were good buddies - fun to read about their relationship.

Again, a good read - I’d highly recommend it to Mizzou fans - and I came away convinced the 1960 Missouri Tigers were the real college football national champions.
