I'd say the odds are not in is Favor of being great at the job out of the gate, but because he has minimal experience doesn't mean he would be a disaster 100%.
It depends on what the job entails. Is it mostly fund raising and Politics? Then he might be better at that being a former Athlete in a real sport and having a Logical mind as opposed to emotion based. He also might represent the true Student Athlete to a better degree having competed at a ultra high level.
Now finance wise etc. and knowing the landscape of the rules of the NCAA etc. might be a huge learning curve.
