drop-off this season.
As I've pointed out numerous times, last year's win total was mainly due to 3 things:
(1) An historically weak schedule.
(2) Extraordinary statistical 'luck' (as modelled by Kenpom) in the close 50/50 games.
(3) Talent inherited from the previous coach (in particular, NBA first-rounder Kobe Brown).
Take away *any* of those 3 factors, and last year's team never would have had an opportunity to get blown out by Princeton in the NCAA tournament.
Gates has a good high school class coming in, but there are no 5-star phenoms expected to have an immediate impact (e.g., like Duke or Kentucky's classes). And in this day & age of the transfer portal, there's no guarantee that any of them will stick around long enough for their development to pay off.
