John Adams said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
James Madison opined our Constitution requires, "sufficient virtue among men for self-government,”
However, it was also clearly felt this needed to be within the framework of personal liberty and freedom from a national religion forced upon the people.
I have been accused of trying to force my morality upon people. Easy to say, yet I think adultery is immoral but don't believe it should be illegal. I believe homosexuality is immoral but don't think it should be illegal. Yet there are acts of gross immorality that, if done in public or involve young children, I find reprehensible to allow.
Difficult issues to be sure.
