Kansas has maybe 4 of the best starters in the country but they are not deep (their 5th starter is a freshman that is out there due to necessity). Their reserve guards are nowhere as good as there starters and there is a huge drop-off on their front line reserve players too. An injury could knock them out of a high seed pretty easily and they could easily get knocked out of the tourney early if they do have a high seed due to lack of depth.
I just watched the game. I thought Mizzou played well but I agree with others that we play too many players. Gates just seems to struggle to find the optimal match-ups for each situation. It's too bad Shaw isn't a little further along in developing his skillset. He's a good defender but his offensive and rebounding contributions are not there yet. He's the missing piece right now. Vanover is a good reserve center. I was kind of impressed by aspects of his game but he's slow and not really a vital part of the offense when he's in.
The transfer portal result in many if not most teams having almost new rosters every year. Few teams are dominant (most lose their critical reserve players every season now) and many teams don't get their shyte together until into the conference season. That's perhaps what you are seeing.
