Ultimately, it boils down to fan/alumni support. The Sooners are the *premier* sports team of Oklahoma. They aren't overshadowed by pro teams like Mizzou with the Chiefs/Royals/Cards/Blues. And for decades (mainly due to cheating), OU has had one of the most successful programs in all of college sports, which further solidified its support and popularity within the state.

Barring a Clemson- or Oregon-like meteoric rise bankrolled by a billionaire alum, Mizzou will never be as popular in Missouri as the Sooners are in Oklahoma... or the Vols in Tennessee... or Tide in Alabama... etc

That's just the way it is.
