In most bookmaking schemes the bookie can not lose if equal amounts are bet on each team. They use line changes to entice bettors to bet more or less in a particular team.

Point spreads may indicate the popularity of reams with bettors, but again they are used by bookmakers to influence the amount bet in each team.
