and lopsided tournaments became a thing when conferences expanded. Other than Uconn in 2011 I couldn't find a team seeded lower than 8 that had won their conference tournament, and almost every winner (since conference expansion) was seeded 1-4. Expanded tournaments that require teams ranked 5-8 to play an extra game make it almost impossible for those teams to win due to having to play a 4th game in 4 days. Conferences should just have the top 8 teams compete, when a 5-8 seeded team does make it to the championship on that 4th day the game usually sucks.
