Gary Pinkel recognized very early that Missouri High School didn’t produce sufficient talent for him to compete in the old Big 12. He adopted the Don James practice of going to the talent. At Washington, James went to California. Pinkel went to Texas. It took some time to develop trust and a rapport, but eventually his recruiters did and the program prospered ((i.e. 2013 season).
When Mizzou moved to the SEC, Pinkel atttempted to repeat the move, stationing four recruiters in the Atlanta area. The practice boycott causes the moves to backfire. Odom attempted to go back to Texas, but he didn’t have the necessary time to rebuild the ties. Who knows what Drinkwiz is doing.
The tropic thing is the ultimate admission of Texas and Oklahoma is returning Mizzou to a very similar to what Pinkel made work and enjoyed.
The bottom line is the State of Missouri doesn’t produce enough talent to make Missouri a first tier SEC program. Iif Mizzou is going to be competitive in the SEC it’s going to have to get a lot of talent sonewhere and the logical place us Texas.
Texas is inn its way to a pooulAtion of 35 million people (five times Missouri’s). It is a football crazy state. It produces tons of talent and it’s used to going out of state. Pinkel prospered recruiting Texas.
