10, 12, 16, 20? Schools to break apart and form their own conference. The entire rest of the country would re-organize into respectable conferences and they would all band together and refuse to play that group. They might get decent ratings for the games they have against each other, but they won’t be able to play for a claim a national championship. Nobody’s going to observe a national championship participated in by 10% of the country.
What could happen, is for the Big Ten and the SEC to work together to form two super conferences that consist of somewhere between 40 and 48 teams in that group would be large enough to take control and dominate the landscape.
You have to have numbers, a very small group of select universities can not do it alone.
Germany had better technology in World War II, but they lost because the Allies and the Soviet Union had numbers.
