The three top states for producing college football talent have traditionally been Florida, Texas and California.
The Big XII included four Texas schools. Two are now in the SEC (Texas and aTm). Additionally, OU, which has always relied on Texas talent, is also in the SEC. The thought occurs that the SEC may prove in some respects to not be all that much different than the Big XII.
Gary Pinkel enjoyed very good success in the Big XII with a recruiting strategy of putting half or more of his recruiting resources virtually full time in Texas.
There were a lot of Texas high school products on the 2013 and 2014 Tiger teams that played for the SEC titles.
Many of the Texas kids were key performers and their play was critical to the success those teams enjoyed.
The current situation seems to be to be quite similar to the one faced by Pinkel when he took over the Mizzou job. I suspect that most Tiger fans would be more than happy if "Drink" could produce the same level of success in the SEC that Pinkel produced in the Big XII.
And bluntly, while NIL and the Portal have changed a lot of things, what Drink is doing doesn't seem to be working all that well.
