Do we want to live with high standards, or not?

I'd give homeless people a choice if found on the street:
-a homeless shelter, or
-living with family, or
-incarceration (with release to inpatient substance use treatment facility if needed).

I understand that idea that "we can't harm these poor people on the streets by forcing them to do something. If they want to use drugs, so be it."

However, most of these folks have other places to go but elect to use drugs on the streets because the other places they have to go - be it family, etc. - come with conditions attached (like, don't do drugs etc.).

It is not compassionate to let people rot in their own filth of **** and drugs on the sidewalk. Nor is it compassionate to everyone else who must share in experiencing their squalor.
