Not illegal. I'm sure they were model citizens.
That area around SLU has been a shìthole for some time.
My wife's cousin lived in a Jesuit retirement community at SLU. They had to have 24 hour controlled access with a gated parking lot to keep out the rif-raf.
My son and a friend went to visit friends in college at SLU. They didn't take a rundown kids car, no they drove the friend's dad's Lexus. He was under strict orders not to go driving around in it.
A week after they got back a guy was carjacked right by where they had stayed.
