Because, ahem, Erdogan was called out for using a fake "coup attempt" as a pretext to crack down on his domestic critics, of which there were many. In fact, Erdogan himself blamed an exiled cleric (oh of course) for staging the coup, which resulted in exactly ZERO DEATHS.
No wonder he and Putin like the occasional mutual tugjob.
