It all starts with the fan base. An avid fan base will demand excellence in a football program by the amount of money that flows into the program thru NIL or otherwise. It will hold the AD accountable with the implied threat of less money coming into the program. The AD knows he/she will be fired and has the money and the willingness to fire the HC to keep his/her job. The AD will spend the amount of money necessary to fire underperforming HCs and hire in good replacement HCs. The high quality incoming HC knows that the battle to improve the program is winnable because the money exists to make it happen.
If D. Lovett started his college career with GA and had a breakout year, do you think he would leave GA? No, because they would pay him and keep him but Mizzou can't do that to the extent GA can.
MU gives Drink a substantial pay raise and extension during his third subpar year. How many SEC schools would do that?
Maybe Vanderbilt? At most any other SEC school, Drink would be in the unemployment line.
Unfortunately this is what MU is and it starts with the fan base and the money they send into the program. It won't change unless the fan base changes and I don't see that happening.
