The US has been around for sometime. Re-working our transportation system as well as our use, source and distribution of energy seems to be a strategy to address what you claim to be "saving the world". We were largely an agrarian nation coming into the 20th century and became more urban - by mid-century with a demographic explosion called the boomers brought on the shift to Suburbia, reliance on petro, h'ways and such. Point is that we adjust.

As for "destroying America", no empire lasts friend, nor should it. US will remain a force in a coming multi-polar world. The "Left" is not about to "destroy America", but reigning in rapacious capitalism a fine idea.
